Madhuri Dixit recently opened up about the emotional grounding, confidence, and resilience she inherited from her mother, revealing how her advice helped her navigate early criticism in the film industry.
The Influence of a Mother’s Love
Madhuri attributes much of her artistic sensibility to her mother. In a heartfelt interview, she shared, “The love for dancing, singing, and my work ethic all came from her.” She emphasized her mother’s emotional nature, stating, “I’m a very emotional person. I get attached to people very fast.”
Her mother also instilled in her the values of discipline and professional integrity. Madhuri recalled, “My work ethic comes from my mom. She taught me that you have to be who you are. Don’t fit into a mould. Break the mould.”
Overcoming Early Criticism in the Industry
Reflecting on her early career, Madhuri acknowledged the unsolicited remarks about her appearance. She recalled, “Many people told me, ‘Do this,’ or questioned how I looked.” During those challenging moments, her mother provided comfort and reassurance.
Madhuri remembered asking her mother, “They’re saying this,” to which her mom encouraged, “Don’t worry. Once you have a successful movie, that’s the very thing they’ll love about you.” This wisdom was hard for her to believe at the time, yet her mother’s confidence in her was unwavering.
The Turning Point: Tezaab
The pivotal moment in Madhuri’s career came with the release of Tezaab. She remarked, “After Tezaab, nobody criticized my appearance anymore. People just accepted me for who I am.” This experience shaped her advice for younger actors entering the industry.
“Even today, I tell new girls—don’t try to fit into a mould. Your uniqueness is your strength,” she encouraged.
Navigating Setbacks in Her Teen Years
When asked about the impact of criticism during her teenage years, Madhuri admitted it affected her, albeit briefly. “I would go to my mom and say, ‘They’re saying this or that.’ She’d simply tell me, ‘Calm down,’” she recounted.
Despite the sting of setbacks, she chose not to dwell on them. “I worked really hard. The rest is in the hands of the audience, whether they like it or not. Then you move on,” she concluded.
By sharing her journey, Madhuri Dixit not only highlights her own resilience but also serves as an inspiration for both aspiring artists and audiences alike.
