Speculations Around a Possible NCP Merger

In recent developments, speculation is growing about a potential merger between the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). This follows comments from Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Supriya Sule, indicating that future reunification could be on the horizon.

Current Political Landscape

Ajit Pawar’s faction and the NCP (Sharad Pawar) have decided to collaborate for the forthcoming local body elections in Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune. During an interview with IANS, Supriya Sule highlighted that their alliance is primarily for the Pune Municipal Corporation elections, while emphasizing that no permanent merger decision has been reached yet.

“Our alliance is formed for the Pune Municipal Corporation elections. We will see about it in the future,” Sule stated.

Focus on Upcoming Elections

Both Ajit Pawar and Supriya Sule reiterated that their immediate priority is the elections. Ajit Pawar commented, “We have not thought about this yet. Our primary focus is on the upcoming elections. Only after the elections will we see.”

Earlier, Ajit Pawar had mentioned that party workers from both factions support the idea of unity, noting that past conflicts within the Pawar family seemed to have been resolved.

Joint Political Initiatives

In an interesting turn of events, Ajit Pawar and Supriya Sule appeared together at a “common political programme” aimed at launching a joint NCP manifesto for the January 15 Pune Municipal and Pimpri-Chinchwad elections.

Tensions Within the Mahayuti Alliance

Meanwhile, tensions have surfaced within the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently criticized Ajit Pawar for his statements against the BJP during the campaign. During an event with actress Girija Oak, Fadnavis stated that both the BJP and NCP had agreed not to contest against each other in these key elections.

“Ajit dada only speaks, but my work speaks. We decided that even if we contest against each other, it would be a friendly contest,” Fadnavis remarked.

He also suggested that Ajit Pawar would refrain from further comments after January 15, casting confidence in the BJP’s election performance.

Historical Context of the NCP Split

This collaboration comes two years after Ajit Pawar and several senior leaders parted ways with his uncle, Sharad Pawar, to align with the BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. Ajit had raised concerns regarding Sharad’s leadership due to his age, leading to a division within the party.

Ajit Pawar was subsequently sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. While he advocated for an alliance with the ruling coalition, Sharad Pawar’s faction opted to remain in opposition.

The Election Commission later recognized Ajit’s faction as the legitimate NCP, allowing them to retain their ‘clock’ symbol, while Sharad Pawar’s faction adopted the ‘tutari’ (curved trumpet) symbol.

Both factions contested elections separately, but after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where Ajit’s faction faced challenges, he acknowledged that their split had been a “mistake.”
