A disturbing case has emerged in Pennsylvania, where a man was found with an astonishing collection of human remains, including 100 human skulls and mummified body parts. This shocking discovery was linked to a series of grave robberies in a historic cemetery near Philadelphia.
Suspect Identified: Jonathan Christ Gerlach
The suspect, 34-year-old Jonathan Christ Gerlach, was apprehended near Mount Moriah Cemetery, an abandoned burial ground on the outskirts of Philadelphia. Authorities have stated that at least 26 mausoleums and underground vaults were forcibly opened since early November.
Discovery of Remains
The investigation took a turning point when officers noticed visible bones and skulls inside a vehicle parked near the cemetery. Subsequent searches of Gerlach’s home in Ephrata and a storage unit revealed over 100 human skulls, long bones, and two decomposing torsos, predominantly stored in his basement.
Condition of the Remains
Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse provided details about the condition of the recovered remains. Some were intact, while others were partially assembled, with various skulls placed on shelves. Notably, jewelry believed to have been taken from graves was recovered, and in some cases, pacemakers were still attached, indicating that not all burials dated back centuries.
Investigation and Arrest
Detectives identified Gerlach as a suspect after tracing license plate data that showed his vehicle often near the cemetery during the break-ins. He was apprehended while returning to his car armed with a crowbar and a burlap bag, which contained mummified remains of two small children, three skulls, and additional bones.
According to police reports, Gerlach admitted to taking about 30 sets of human remains and identified some of the targeted graves. Authorities are still assessing the total number of remains recovered, which may be higher than initially thought.
Overview of Mount Moriah Cemetery
Founded in 1855, Mount Moriah Cemetery covers roughly 160 acres and is believed to hold around 150,000 graves, making it one of the largest abandoned burial grounds in the United States. The suspect primarily targeted sealed vaults and mausoleums, causing significant damage to stonework in an effort to access the remains inside.
Ongoing Investigation and Charges
The motives behind Gerlach’s actions remain unclear, and prosecutors have refrained from speculating as the investigation continues. Gerlach has been charged with 100 counts of abuse of a corpse and receiving stolen property, alongside multiple counts of burglary, theft, trespassing, and desecration of a historic burial site. He is currently being held on a $1 million bond, although court records do not indicate if he has legal representation.
Identifying and Returning Remains
Authorities have stated that the process of identifying the remains and returning them to their original burial sites will be lengthy, given the number involved and the age of many graves. The community watches closely as this unsettling case unfolds, shedding light on the dark realities of grave robbery.
