Protests Erupt Over Minority Persecution in Bangladesh

DHAKA: Minority groups in Bangladesh have voiced strong allegations against the government, asserting its failure to prevent “violence, killings, and persecution of minority communities.” They criticized Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for his unfulfilled promises to create a humane Bangladesh, labeling him as an “inhumane chief adviser.”

Fatal Incident Sparks Outrage

The allegations intensified following the tragic death of Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker. He was beaten to death by a mob and subsequently burned for alleged blasphemy on December 18 in Mymensingh, prompting renewed calls for accountability.

Calls for Action Against Government Inaction

Manindra Kumar Nath, joint coordinator of the Minority Unity Front, urged people from all communities to demand the removal of Yunus. He criticized the ongoing persecution of minorities since the interim government assumed power.

Concern Over Divisive Forces and Violence

Furthermore, Nim Chanda Bhowmik, president of the Bangladesh Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad, expressed concerns about divisive forces and militant groups allegedly being supported, which he said contribute to escalating violence. He highlighted recent attacks on media outlets such as the Daily Star and Prothom Alo, as well as cultural organizations like Chhayanaut and Udichi, emphasizing the lack of effective government response.

Joint Protests by Media Organizations

The Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh and the Editors’ Council convened a joint protest meeting. They are steadfast in their determination to continue protesting until those responsible for recent arson attacks on the Daily Star and Prothom Alo are brought to justice.
