Coal-Based Power Plants Defer Maintenance to Address Electricity Demand

    Introduction

In a significant move, several coal-based power plants in India, collectively boasting a capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW), have postponed their scheduled maintenance by three months. This decision aims to better accommodate the surging electricity demand across the country.

Increased Electricity Demand Amid Geopolitical Challenges

The Ministry of Power reported that an additional 27 GW load is anticipated at the distribution level. This surge is attributed to the increasing trend towards induction-based cooking, spurred by a decline in LPG supply due to ongoing military conflicts in West Asia. Piyush Singh, the additional secretary at the Ministry of Power, highlighted the urgency of this decision.

    Shift in Power Plant Operations

Originally, 15 GW of capacity was slated for maintenance; however, 10 GW will remain operational to mitigate the effects of approximately 8 GW of gas-based plants that are currently inactive due to supply shortages. This proactive measure aims to prepare for the anticipated summer demand surge.

The Geopolitical Impact on Energy Supply

Recent geopolitical tensions have also led state-owned oil companies to delay their annual refinery shutdowns. Addressing the evolving dynamics of energy supply, Singh explained that planned shutdowns for maintenance and machinery repairs are essential yet require adaptation in light of changing circumstances.

    Accelerating Power Generation Capacity

To ensure energy stability, the Ministry is hastening the addition of 22 GW of power generation capacity. This will encompass various sources, including thermal, solar, wind, hydro, and both battery and pumped hydro storage, set to be implemented over the next three months.

    Induction Cooking: A Growing Trend

With more households transitioning to induction cooking due to limited access to cooking gas, Krushna Chandra Panigrahy, director general of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), noted that this shift may lead to an “additional layer of demand,” particularly during peak morning and evening hours.

    Demand Estimations for Induction Cooking

Estimations suggest that the extra demand from induction cooking may range between 13 GW and 27 GW, depending on the level of adoption. However, Panigrahy emphasized that precise demand forecasting remains challenging, given the diverse cooking habits influenced by regional climate and socio-economic factors.

    India’s Robust Power Infrastructure

As India braces for a peak power demand that could reach 271 GW this summer, Singh assures that the electricity system is "robust, well-diversified, and adequately positioned." The current installed capacity exceeds 531 GW, featuring a balanced mix of coal, renewables, hydro, and nuclear sources, with non-fossil fuels making up more than 50% of the total capacity.

    Strategic Measures to Meet Demand

In preparation for peak demand, the government is focusing on two critical short-term strategies: maintaining adequate coal stocks at thermal power plants and ensuring the full operational capacity of imported coal-based plants.

    Conclusion

Amid rising electricity demands and geopolitical challenges, India’s approach to deferring maintenance of coal-based power plants while enhancing overall generation capacity showcases a proactive strategy to secure energy supply and meet the needs of its population effectively.
