    NHAI Highlights Telecom Coverage Gaps on Highways

    Introduction: The Importance of Mobile Connectivity

    The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has raised significant concerns regarding the lack of mobile network coverage on highways and expressways. This issue not only inconveniences commuters but also jeopardizes emergency communication for responders, such as ambulance services and patrol vehicles, in case of incidents.

    Identification of Telecom Black Spots

    In a proactive effort to improve safety and operational efficiency, NHAI has identified 424 telecom black spots across approximately 1,750 kilometers of highway. This information has been communicated to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

    The Letter to TRAI

    NHAI Chairman Satosh Kumar Yadav reached out to TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti, emphasizing how inadequate mobile service adversely impacts highway operations and coordination with enforcement agencies.

    Areas Most Affected

    Officials have noted that coverage gaps are especially prevalent on greenfield highways and expressways in remote areas. Specifically, stretches along the Delhi-Mumbai and Bengaluru-Chennai expressways have been identified as critical areas lacking connectivity.

    Key Examples of Missing Coverage

    • Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: Three segments totaling approximately 69 km near Ratlam lack mobile service.
    • Harda to Betul, Madhya Pradesh: A 51 km stretch with no network coverage.
    • Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway: Nearly 15 km without connectivity.
    • Tambaram-Tindivanam Section, Tamil Nadu: 17 km without mobile network.
    • Warangal-Khammam Section, Andhra Pradesh: 11.8 km lacking coverage.
    • Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, Thane: 10.8 km without service.

    Addressing Accident-Prone Areas

    In addition to the coverage gaps, NHAI has identified around 1,665 accident-prone locations due to stray cattle movement on national highways and expressways. This safety concern has also been reported to TRAI.

    Proposed Safety Solutions

    NHAI proposes proactive SMS alerts and flash SMS notifications at geo-mapped accident-prone areas. These alerts are designed to inform road users approximately 15 minutes before approaching hazardous zones, significantly enhancing road safety.

    Conclusion: A Call for Action

    To facilitate these vital alerts, NHAI has urged TRAI to direct telecom operators to provide these services free of charge. The objective is to prioritize road user safety and reduce potential fatalities on Indian highways.
