Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday condemned the
Election Commission for its inability to provide satisfactory answers following a lengthy meeting regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal.
Details of the Meeting
Banerjee stated that the two-and-a-half hour discussion, which addressed eight to ten concerns raised by his party, yielded “no concrete answer to anything” except clarity on just two or three points. He noted that when questions regarding the SIR arose, the Commission often diverted the conversation to unrelated matters such as citizenship.
Previous Interaction with the Commission
“We discussed eight to ten issues. The meeting started at 12:00 PM and lasted two and a half hours. Last time, on November 28th, our delegation of ten members posed five questions to the Election Commission, but not a single precise answer was given,” Banerjee remarked.
Allegations of Selective Information Leaks
He accused the Election Commission of leaking selective information about the previous meeting to journalists, asserting that the Commission claimed to have addressed all inquiries. Banerjee emphasized, “The Trinamool Congress has digital evidence showing that not a single question was answered last time. This time, aside from two or three points, we received no clarity on anything.” He also reiterated how discussions regarding the SIR were continually redirected to issues of citizenship.
Composition of the Delegation
These statements were made following a meeting held by a ten-member TMC delegation with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi. The delegation was led by TMC National General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee and included notable members such as Rajya Sabha chief whip Md Nadimul Haque, MPs Derek O’Brien, Kalyan Banerjee, Mamata Thakur, Saket Gokhale, and Ritabrata Banerjee, along with senior leaders like Pradip Mazumdar, Chandrima Bhattacharya, and Manas Bhunia.
Impact of the SIR Enumeration Process
During this enumeration, over 58.2 lakh names were removed from the electoral rolls. The Election Commission of India published the draft electoral roll for West Bengal on December 16. The claims and objections period will continue until January 15, 2026, and the final voter list is scheduled for release on February 14, 2026.
