Tragic Lynching of Young Villager in Odisha: A Disturbing Incident

    Overview of the Incident

In a shocking turn of events, a 20-year-old villager from Suti, West Bengal, was brutally beaten to death in Sambalpur, Odisha, during his first job outside his home state. The victim, Juel Rana, had recently started working as a mason and had only been in Odisha for five days when the incident occurred.

    Allegations of Ethnicity and Violence

Witnesses and family members claim that Juel was targeted by a mob who accused him of being a Bangladeshi. However, Odisha’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Himanshu Lal insists that the violence was related to a monetary dispute, denying any communal or linguistic motives behind the attack.

    Details of the Attack

Local police revealed that tensions escalated after local youths demanded bidis from Juel and his colleagues. This argument rapidly turned violent, leading to an attack that left Juel dead and two other migrant workers in critical condition. Authorities have arrested all six individuals suspected of involvement in the assault, and an investigation is currently underway.

    Family’s Perspective

In a heartfelt complaint to the Suti police, Juel’s mother, Nazma Bibi, recounted the harrowing events. She stated that her son had traveled to Sambalpur on December 20 to seek employment. On the evening of December 24, she received alarming news: a group of seven or eight locals had attacked her son and his coworkers near their living quarters.

“They accused them of being Bengali-speaking Bangladeshis and threatened to beat them to death. They assaulted my son and his colleagues with sticks, iron rods, and sharp weapons. My son died on the spot while those injured are receiving medical treatment,” she described in her complaint.

    Conclusion and Next Steps

This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of migrant workers and the tensions simmering in communities. Juel’s father, Ziaul Haque, who works as a mason in Kerala, now faces an unimaginable loss. The local community is left reeling, as authorities work to uncover the truth behind this senseless act of violence. Further investigations are necessary to ensure justice for Juel and his family.
