Veteran actor Prem Chopra
has shared insightful thoughts on the evolution of Hindi cinema, highlighting the shift from emotionally-driven narratives to high-octane, violent spectacles. Reflecting on the transition from icons like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan to contemporary films, Chopra emphasizes that this transformation is largely influenced by trends and audience acceptance.
‘It’s a Trend Driven by Audience Demand’
Chopra elaborates that the rise of aggressive storytelling is not coincidental but a result of what resonates with audiences. “It’s a trend that people follow,” he explained. According to him, certain films gain success due to their action, fighting sequences, and powerful dialogues, prompting others to adopt similar narratives. “Even if some audiences may not fully appreciate it, the commercial success spurs repetition,” he noted in an interview with Vickey Lalwani.
Thoughts on Dhurandhar: ‘Good, but Lengthy’
Discussing filmmaker Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar, Chopra expressed that upon watching the first part, he found it engaging yet slightly prolonged. “It was good, but it was too lengthy. However, it succeeded because audiences embraced it significantly—after a long time, people returned to theaters,” he remarked.
When asked how he would approach the violence if he were directing the film, Chopra responded pragmatically: “Cinema is commercial. I would make it according to the accepted trends,” while adding, “But yes, I would have suggested reducing the levels of abuse and violence.”
Admiration for Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna
The veteran actor also praised both Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna for their commendable performances in the film. “I used to see Ranveer Singh at a club when he was trying to break into the industry. I was amazed at his performance,” Chopra said, noting the challenge of selecting the best among the actors, all of whom gave their best effort.
He also appreciated Akshaye Khanna’s role, which resonated more with the audience. “His role had a stronger connection with the audience, enhancing its acceptance,” he explained, highlighting the impact of Khanna’s character in the film. Chopra remarked, “In the second part of Dhurandhar, Ranveer has done an exceptional job.”
‘Different Times, Different Cinema’
In conclusion, Chopra emphasized that cinema evolves over time. “Different kinds of films are made today; everything changes as time progresses,” he stated, underscoring that varied styles reflect the tastes of different eras. The Dhurandhar franchise, including Dhurandhar: The Revenge, has achieved a remarkable milestone at the box office, grossing over Rs 3000 crore globally, solidifying its place as one of Indian cinema’s highest-grossing series.
With a combined total of over Rs 3019 crore, the franchise has surpassed notable blockbusters like SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali series, Sukumar’s Pushpa, and Prashanth Neel’s KGF films.
