Pakistan cricket is currently facing another significant issue, having already been embroiled in a controversial ball-tampering scandal involving prominent players such as Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf during a recent match in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
What Happened?
New reports suggest that Lahore Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Afridi and overseas player Sikandar Raza have violated team security protocols while staying at their hotel. According to police officials, the players were found hosting four guests in Raza’s hotel room until 1:25 a.m., despite prior warnings against such actions.
Failed Security Requests
The team’s owner sought permission from PSL CEO Salman Naseer to allow the guests into Raza’s room, but these requests were denied on security grounds. Muhammad Faisal, DIG (Operations, Lahore), informed the PSL CEO about this serious breach, highlighting the potential implications for player safety.
Two requests were made by the Qalandars’ liaison officer at approximately 10:35 p.m. and again at 11:00 p.m. on a Saturday, both of which were denied. Despite security staff’s objections, Shaheen and Raza proceeded to host their guests in the room.
Violation of Security Protocols
Reports indicate that around 11:05 p.m., the PCB and security personnel observed Shaheen and Raza escorting the four guests into the room, which clearly contravenes established security protocols devised to safeguard players and officials.
A senior police official has since communicated to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that this incident constitutes a significant violation of the board’s security measures.
Sikandar Raza’s Response
Following the incident, Raza addressed the allegations in a post-match press conference, firmly denying any wrongdoing.
"Shaheen ne koi manmani nahi kari. Meri hi request thi, Maine kaha tha meri family and friends aaye hai. Pehle 4 saalo me aisa kuch bhi nahi tha. Mujhe mere family aur relatives ko milne ki ijazat thi…"
Raza stated that he believed he had permission to host family and friends, emphasizing he and Shaheen were unaware of any changes to the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Conclusion
As the PSL progresses, the Lahore Qalandars face added scrutiny and challenges beyond the ongoing ball-tampering controversy. This security breach raises concerns about player conduct and compliance with the established protocols, emphasizing the importance of maintaining integrity within the sport.
