Puducherry Assembly Elections 2026: Key Candidates and Alliances

The Puducherry assembly elections set for April 9, 2026, have drawn significant attention due to the presence of several candidates with notable political family backgrounds. In total, 291 candidates will compete for 30 seats in the 33-member Puducherry legislative assembly, with the remaining three members nominated by the central government.

A Johnkumar: A Political Legacy

BJP leader A Johnkumar is contesting from Nellithope. Having previously served as a minister in the outgoing N Rangasamy-led government, he was also the sitting MLA from Kamaraj Nagar. Johnkumar won this seat as a Congress candidate in 2016, and it has remained under his family’s influence, with his son, Richards Johnkumar, securing a victory in 2021 on a BJP ticket.

V Vaithilingam: A High-Profile Contest

In the Thattanchavady constituency, former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam will face off against outgoing Chief Minister N Rangasamy. Vaithilingam, the son of Puducherry’s second chief minister, V Venkatasubba Reddiar, is currently the Puducherry Congress president and serves as the sitting MP for the Union Territory’s only Lok Sabha seat. Vignesh Kannan: The DMK’s New Face
