Punjab Government Expands Pregnancy Care at Aam Aadmi Clinics

Introduction to the Enhanced Healthcare Initiative

The Punjab government has taken significant steps to improve pregnancy-related healthcare services at Aam Aadmi Clinics. Recent data indicates a notable increase in ante-natal care utilization across the state just four months after the initiative’s launch.

Increase in Services and Participation

Over the past four months, more than 10,000 pregnant women have benefited from free ultrasound scans. Additionally, around 20,000 expectant mothers are now attending Aam Aadmi Clinics monthly for essential pregnancy check-ups.

Addressing Maternal Health Concerns

This initiative aims to enhance early detection and monitoring at the primary healthcare level, amid rising concerns regarding maternal health indicators in Punjab. The state records approximately 4.3 lakh pregnancies annually. However, statistics reveal that historically, fewer than 70% of pregnant women received a first ante-natal check-up, with less than 60% completing the recommended four visits.

Maternal Mortality Ratio Highlights Gaps

Punjab’s maternal mortality ratio stands at 90 per one lakh live births, exceeding the national average. This highlights the critical need for regular monitoring and timely referrals in maternal healthcare.

Comprehensive Ante-Natal Services Offered

Under the expanded model, Aam Aadmi Clinics now provide a wide array of ante-natal tests, including:

  • Blood tests
  • Sugar and thyroid screening
  • Hemoglobin levels
  • HIV and syphilis screenings
  • Fetal heart rate assessments

For cases requiring ultrasounds, doctors issue referral slips, allowing women to access scans free of cost at nearly 500 government-empanelled private diagnostic centres. The market cost for an ultrasound typically ranges from Rs 800 to Rs 2,000.

Identifying High-Risk Pregnancies

The enhanced system has successfully identified around 5,000 high-risk pregnancies every month, facilitating timely follow-up and referrals to higher medical facilities when necessary.

Financial Relief Through Free Ultrasound Services

The government estimates that the provision of free ultrasound services has led to a financial relief of about Rs 1 crore so far, significantly easing the burden on expectant mothers.

The Backbone of Punjab’s Healthcare Network

Punjab boasts 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics, which serve as the foundation of the state’s primary healthcare infrastructure. Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized that the expansion of pregnancy care through these clinics aims to improve access to essential services closer to home, thereby reducing the strain on larger hospitals.

Commitment to Improving Maternal and Newborn Health

With a focus on enhancing coverage, early diagnosis, and continuity of care, the Punjab government is dedicated to improving health outcomes for mothers and newborns across the state.
