Ranveer Singh’s latest film, Dhurandhar, has become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, surpassing the impressive ₹1,000 crore mark at the global box office. However, its success has not been without challenges, particularly concerning its release in several Middle Eastern countries.

Box Office Success and Global Impact

Despite its massive worldwide earnings, Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, faced restrictions in markets like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. This ban has led to an estimated financial setback of nearly $10 million (approximately ₹90 crore) from the Gulf region alone, according to overseas distributor Pranab Kapadia.

The Importance of the Gulf Market

Pranab highlighted the critical role the Gulf region plays for Indian action films. He expressed disappointment over the film’s inability to release in these markets, stating, "Action films have always performed very well in the Middle East." He emphasized the need to respect local regulations, saying, "We have to respect the views and the rules of every territory and every country."

Challenges in the Film’s Release

Dhurandhar isn’t alone in facing these restrictions. Pranab noted that other Indian films, like Fighter, have also struggled to find a release in the Gulf. He acknowledged their efforts to secure a screening, reflecting a broader trend affecting Bollywood films in the region.

December Holidays Help Mitigate Losses

Despite these setbacks, the December holiday season eased the financial impact. Many Gulf residents traveling abroad took the opportunity to watch Dhurandhar in theatres outside their home countries. “Especially in December, they are on holiday and have enjoyed the film,” Pranab explained.

A Film with a Strong Cast and Controversial Themes

Set in Karachi’s Lyari area, Dhurandhar features Ranveer Singh as an Indian spy who infiltrates a Pakistani gang. The film boasts a talented ensemble, including Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Rakesh Bedi, and Sara Arjun. Directed by Aditya Dhar, it serves as the first installment of a planned two-part spy franchise, igniting discussions about its treatment of anti-terror operations and geopolitical tensions.
