LiveKit is at the forefront of building the infrastructure layer for the voice-driven era of computing. Our platform equips developers with comprehensive tools to build, test, deploy, scale, and monitor agents in production. Since our founding in 2021, LiveKit has powered voice AI applications for major companies such as OpenAI, xAI, Salesforce, Coursera, and Spotify. Collectively, we facilitate billions of calls each year, serving thousands of organizations.
About This Role
We are seeking a Design Engineer to lead and advance LiveKit’s Design System. This role is integral to the Design organization and requires close collaboration with Product Engineering teams.
As a Design Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the fundamental elements that shape our product UI, including components, tokens, motion patterns, accessibility standards, and tooling. Your goal is to ensure that LiveKit’s product experience is cohesive, high-quality, and scalable.
Ideal Candidate Profile
This role is perfect for someone who:
- Thinks in systems, abstractions, and primitives
- Possesses extensive UI engineering experience with a strong focus on visual quality, interaction design, and usability
- Cares deeply about craftsmanship, performance, and ergonomics
- Is enthusiastic about creating AI-native design systems for both humans and models to utilize
Your contributions will primarily support product surfaces such as dashboards, core products, documentation, and developer tooling.
Your Responsibilities
Leading and Evolving the Design System
- Own the roadmap for LiveKit’s design system, covering components, tokens, foundations, and interaction patterns
- Define and uphold standards for component quality, accessibility, and usability
- Establish governance and contribution models to enable teams to scale responsibly
Building Primitives for Scale and Quality
- Architect and implement robust, accessible, production-grade UI components
- Maintain design tokens, theming infrastructure, and shared foundations
- Ensure components are performant, modular, and easy to adopt
- Invest in documentation, examples, and tooling to enhance system adoption
Raising UI Standards Across Products
- Collaborate with designers and engineers to enhance visual appeal, interaction quality, and cross-product consistency
- Assist teams in transitioning to systematic, reusable design patterns
- Advocate for best practices in layout, motion, accessibility, and interaction design
Prototyping and Exploring Advanced Interactions
- Create high-fidelity prototypes to explore new patterns, validate UX decisions, and influence product direction
- Enhance usability and clarity through innovative motion, micro-interactions, and expressive UI
Making the System AI-Native
- Shape how AI tools and models interface with LiveKit’s design system
- Investigate methods for large language models (LLMs) and automation to generate UI using a set of design primitives
- Develop or influence tooling to ensure design tokens, components, and patterns are both machine-readable and model-friendly
- Explore how design systems can be utilized in generative workflows beyond just human users
Who You Are
A strong candidate for this position will possess:
- 7+ years of experience in front-end engineering or design engineering
- A refined design sensibility, focusing on layout, motion, affordances, and visual refinement
- Expertise in TypeScript, React, Tailwind, component-driven architectures, and accessibility best practices
- Experience in building or maintaining design systems (components, tokens, documentation, governance, tooling)
- A portfolio showcasing UI engineering craftsmanship, component designs, and prototyping skills
- A strategic and systematic mindset, focusing on reusable patterns rather than one-off solutions
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to cross-functionally influence
Desirable: AI-Native Experience
We’re particularly interested if you:
- Have experimented with LLMs for generating UI or utilizing design systems
- Have developed tools allowing AI to compose interfaces from structured components
- Are curious about how design systems can function as inputs to generative or agentic workflows
- Have a keen interest in the future of human and AI collaboration in design and UI engineering
Our Commitment to You
At LiveKit, our aim is to create an environment where people can achieve the best work of their careers, characterized by:
- A high level of trust and autonomy
- A strong standard for craftsmanship and quality
- Real influence over product direction
- Encouragement to explore ambitious technical and design ideas
