Overview of the Principal Product Manager Role

As a Principal Product Manager in GitLab’s Security and Compliance section, you will focus on driving growth and value realization across the Security and Compliance portfolio, particularly within GitLab Ultimate. You will partner closely with the VP of Product for Security and Compliance and coordinate with product managers, UX, engineering, and marketing teams to align independently owned initiatives into coherent customer workflows and clear portfolio priorities.

Your Key Responsibilities

You will bring in-depth application security expertise to shape strategy in areas lacking clear ownership. This includes transitioning internal security capabilities and research into customer-facing products, identifying and validating emerging security use cases, and guiding new ideas from initial exploration to product-market fit. Additionally, you will fortify product-led partnerships with external vendors, expanding customer value.

Elevating Product Decision Quality

A core component of this role is elevating product decision quality across the team. You will mentor and review PM work on aspects that significantly impact portfolio outcomes, improving problem framing, product requirements, go-to-market strategies, and escalation management. Utilizing AI-native workflows and tools like GitLab Duo, you will enhance discovery, validation, and communication from concept to outcome.

• Transforming internal security tools, practices, and research into unique customer-facing capabilities within GitLab’s DevSecOps platform.
• Establishing a reliable pathway from innovative ideas in Security and Compliance to validated products ready for broader investment and scaling.

What You’ll Do

• Lead product strategy across the Security and Compliance portfolio, focusing on application security testing to develop cohesive roadmaps and measurable growth.
• Ensure the end-to-end definition and delivery of high-impact initiatives, including packaging internal security capabilities for customers and strengthening vulnerability research.
• Mentor closely with Product Managers in scanners to enhance the quality of product execution and success during launches.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, design, partnerships, and go-to-market teams to shape strategic collaborations.
• Drive a clear strategy for vulnerability research and security partnerships, translating opportunities into measurable product outcomes.
• Utilize AI-first tools to rapidly explore ideas, create prototypes, and communicate concepts efficiently.
• Build strong cross-departmental relationships to improve resolution processes and team satisfaction across GitLab.

What You’ll Bring

• Strong product management experience in application security or related fields, evidenced by ownership of products from strategy through execution.
• An understanding of multiple security product areas, including code scanning and security testing.
• Experience operating across various functional scopes and collaborating with go-to-market, marketing, and internal security teams.

About the Team

The Security and Compliance product team manages an extensive portfolio of security capabilities within GitLab’s DevSecOps platform, including application security scanners and other security features. The team is expanding to include vulnerability research, innovation incubation, and strategic partnerships. Joining this distributed team means collaborating across time zones in a documentation-first manner, focusing on elevating security capability development within GitLab.
