The Passing of a Soccer Icon

PARIS: Former Marseille coach Rolland Courbis, a charismatic figure in French soccer who later became a prominent pundit, has died at the age of 72. RMC Radio announced Courbis’ passing but did not disclose the cause of death, citing an agreement with his family.

Early Life and Career

Born in Marseille, Courbis developed his skills in the club’s youth academy. As a rugged defender, he was part of the team that achieved a remarkable French league and cup double in 1972. He later returned to Marseille as a coach in the late 1990s. Courbis also enjoyed success as a player, securing two French league titles and a French Cup during his time with Monaco.

A Unique Personality

"A Marseillais at heart, he embodied popular, dynamic football," Marseille remarked in their tribute. "His unmistakable accent carried his frank, direct, often passionate, and always sincere words." Courbis’ personality made him a beloved figure among fans and players alike.

Coaching Career Highlights

Throughout his coaching career, Courbis had stints with several clubs, including Bordeaux, Lens, Montpellier, and USM Alger. One of the defining moments of his career was an incredible comeback while coaching Marseille, where his team rallied from a 4-0 deficit against Montpellier in 1998 to win the match 5-4.

A Life Full of Challenges

Apart from his successes, Courbis led a tumultuous life. He was seriously injured in 1996 when gunmen targeted the president of a French soccer team outside a stadium. Courbis was struck by a bullet during the incident and faced various legal troubles, including time spent in prison.

Tributes from the Soccer Community

France coach Didier Deschamps expressed his condolences, stating that French soccer lost "a fine connoisseur of football and its inner workings." "He was a true passionate figure," Deschamps added. In recent years, Courbis shared his passion for the game as a consultant on RMC, where he engaged with fans through his commentary.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Courbis’ passion resonated through his unique Marseille accent and his direct rapport with listeners. RMC noted, "He maintained a warmth that kept the language of the supporters, while always being demanding on substance." His contributions to soccer, both on and off the field, will not be forgotten.

Rolland Courbis will be remembered as more than just a coach or pundit; he was a true icon of French soccer whose impact will endure for years to come.
