Ukrainian Drone Strike Targets Russian Oil Depot

A Ukrainian drone strike triggered a fire at an oil depot in Russia’s southern Volgograd region on Saturday, according to regional authorities. Both sides continue to target energy infrastructure amidst escalating hostilities.

Evacuations and Damage Reports

Though there were no immediate reports of casualties, residents living near the depot may face evacuations, as indicated by the regional governor’s post on Telegram, reported by AP. The extent of the damage remains unclear.

Kyiv’s Strategy Against Moscow

Kyiv has previously stated that its long-range drone strikes on Russian energy facilities aim to reduce Moscow’s oil export revenues, which allegedly finance Russia’s full-scale invasion. Meanwhile, Russia continues its assaults on Ukrainian power and fuel infrastructure.

Recent Attacks and Casualties

The strike on the oil depot followed a significant overnight attack by Russia on Ukraine, during which hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles were launched, according to Ukrainian officials. This assault resulted in at least four fatalities in Kyiv, including an emergency medical worker, with many others injured.

Nuclear Capable Missiles and Escalation

For only the second time in this nearly four-year conflict, Russia deployed its nuclear-capable Oreshnik hypersonic missile, targeting western Ukraine. This action serves as a pronounced warning to Kyiv’s NATO allies, as reported by AP.

Russian Attacks on Ukrainian Infrastructure

Russia’s defense ministry announced that its forces employed aviation, drones, missiles, and artillery against Ukrainian energy facilities and fuel-storage depots overnight. However, specific locations and details regarding the damage were not disclosed.

Ukrainian Air Force Response

The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 121 drones and one Iskander-M ballistic missile overnight into Saturday, successfully intercepting 94 of those drones.
