Saudi Arabia has achieved a significant environmental milestone by transforming degraded land into lush green spaces. This progress highlights the nation’s commitment to restoring ecosystems, increasing vegetation, and combating desertification.
Major Restoration Efforts Under the Saudi Green Initiative
Under the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) launched in 2021 by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, the Kingdom has successfully restored one million hectares of degraded land and planted over 159 million trees. The initiative aims to plant a total of 10 billion trees, which is equivalent to rehabilitating 40 million hectares across Saudi Arabia.
Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
Abdulrahman Alfadley, the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, emphasized that this achievement demonstrates the leadership’s commitment to environmental sustainability as part of Saudi Vision 2030. The restoration efforts began with the rehabilitation of just 18,000 hectares, growing to 250,000 hectares by 2024, and finally reaching the one-million-hectare milestone in early 2026.
Collaborative Efforts for Biodiversity Preservation
Alfadley highlighted the importance of coordination between government entities, the private sector, and local communities in driving these efforts. He underscored the role of the initiative in preserving biodiversity and promoting native flora, alongside the importance of royal reserves and modern water harvesting techniques in sustaining these projects. “This success embodies a unified national effort,” he stated, reinforcing the significance of wildlife conservation and strengthening ecosystem resilience.
Future Goals: Expanding Green Cover by 2030
With current successes paving the way, the next target is to restore 2.5 million hectares by 2030. This ambitious goal will be supported by projects focusing on dam water utilization and rainfall harvesting, which are crucial for the long-term expansion of green cover.
Significant Milestone Achievements
Vice Minister Eng. Mansour Almushaiti described the recent achievement as a “qualitative leap” towards the Kingdom’s ambitious environmental targets, emphasizing its alignment with the SGI’s goals. He mentioned specialized programs, such as the National Cloud Seeding Program, which has improved rainfall and contributed to a 50% reduction in dust storms in 2025 compared to the previous year.
International Recognition of Efforts
These remarkable achievements have garnered international attention. Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts, stating that they reflect an integrated approach and strong political will. “This achievement proves that land restoration is possible even in the most challenging environments,” she noted.
Strengthening Global Cooperation
Fouad also highlighted that the Kingdom’s initiatives contribute to enhancing international cooperation regarding land restoration. This includes participation in global efforts such as the Middle East Green Initiative and hosting COP16 of the UNCCD.
In conclusion, Saudi Arabia’s significant strides in environmental restoration not only align with national goals but also set an example for global environmental initiatives aimed at tackling desertification and promoting biodiversity.
