Role Overview
In this position, you will lead the Core Planning team within GitLab’s Plan stage, focusing on how development teams organize, coordinate, and strategize their work at an enterprise scale. Currently, the planning process is fragmented—teams juggle various tools like issues, epics, and tickets, often struggling to connect their daily activities to broader business objectives. Your mission will be to transform this process by creating flexible, configurable planning fundamentals that replace outdated agile methods with intelligent automation. By evolving our work item model and integrating AI functionality, you’ll alleviate repetitive planning tasks, allowing teams to prioritize strategy and delivery. You will report to the Group Manager of Product, collaborating closely with product design and engineering leadership to redefine planning for a modern, AI-driven landscape. In your first year, you’ll reshape the core planning experience for millions of developers across more than 100,000 GitLab customers, turning planning from a burden into an intelligent partner in their success.
Your Responsibilities
- Lead the vision and strategy for the Core Planning team, guiding GitLab’s transition from traditional agile methodologies to enterprise-ready planning fundamentals.
- Own the product strategy for work items, streamlining the fragmented landscape of issues, epics, and tickets into a unified, scalable framework.
- Enhance planning workflows by integrating agentic AI functionalities, replacing manual tasks with reliable automation for end users.
- Work collaboratively with engineering, design, and product teams to identify developer and engineering manager needs, transforming them into products that improve coordination and workflows.
- Define the connections between planning and business outcomes, helping teams understand the ROI of their work and make informed, data-driven decisions.
- Co-design the approach to managing context and knowledge, ensuring that essential business information flows seamlessly throughout the development lifecycle.
- Collaborate with the Knowledge & Context and Project Management teams to streamline responsibilities and reduce redundancy as the planning experience evolves during the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
Qualifications
- Experience in building or shipping products for SaaS, DevOps, or DevSecOps platforms, or in scale-ups in related fields.
- Working knowledge of software development processes and an understanding of how development teams coordinate their tasks.
- A proven ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams, using data and metrics to inform product decisions.
- Quick learner who can adapt decisions based on new information rather than relying solely on past experiences.
- A track record of efficiently contributing to new product areas or organizations without extended onboarding.
- A mindset that encourages fresh perspectives and questions existing methodologies, even if you have experience in related fields.
- Experience collaborating in distributed or remote environments, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
About the Team
The Plan stage is redefining how development teams organize, coordinate, and execute their work. As the leader of the Core Planning team, you will be central to this transformation, responsible for foundational workflows and mechanics that enhance effective planning at scale. Working closely with engineering partners and product designers, your team will simplify the configuration and coordination of work items while integrating AI-powered functionalities to automate repetitive planning tasks. This enables teams to focus on strategy and intent rather than traditional agile estimation methods. You will address some of the most engaging challenges in DevOps, connecting business outcomes to team velocity and scaling planning workflows across large organizations. The team operates asynchronously across distributed areas, collaborating closely with engineering, design, and broader initiatives focused on knowledge management and intelligent automation. This is a unique opportunity to redefine how millions of developers collaborate, replacing manual processes with intelligent systems that enhance decision-making.
