Amit Shah Addresses Gorkha Issue with Constitutional Solutions

Union Home Minister’s Commitment to the Gorkha Community

During a rally in Gangarampur, South Dinajpur, on Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized that the Gorkha issue would be resolved in a constitutional manner, without the need to partition Bengal. Shah reassured the Gorkha community that, if elected, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would develop an eco-adventure hub in the Darjeeling Hills while addressing their concerns.

Shift in BJP’s Stance on Gorkhaland

In a notable departure from previous positions held by Bengal BJP leaders advocating for Gorkhaland, Shah clarified during a media interaction that the creation of a separate state for Gorkhaland was not part of BJP’s agenda. He criticized groups he referred to as the "tukde tukde gang," alleging they were attempting to fragment Bengal via the Siliguri Corridor.

Promises for the 2026 Bengal Assembly Elections

BJP’s manifesto for the upcoming 2026 Bengal Assembly elections includes commitments to recognize the Gorkha identity and to advocate for the inclusion of the Rajbanshi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Notably, the Bimal Gurung-led Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has pledged unconditional support for BJP candidates in Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalimpong, seeking a "permanent political solution" for the Hills.

Development Plans for North Bengal

In addition to addressing the Gorkha situation, Shah laid out an ambitious development plan for North Bengal. He highlighted plans to establish four industrial parks, a semiconductor factory, and four industrial townships in the region. He also pledged to initiate construction of an AIIMS facility in North Bengal within two months, alongside a 600-bed cancer hospital. Furthermore, he promised land ownership rights for tea garden workers to enhance their livelihoods.

Accountability for Corruption Allegations Against TMC

Shah did not shy away from accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of corruption, particularly concerning flood relief funds. He asserted that when the Centre allocated Rs 100 crore for flood relief, TMC officials misappropriated the funds. He vowed to hold those responsible accountable for every penny taken.

Political Maneuvering by CM Mamata Banerjee

Shah also critiqued West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, suggesting that her expulsion of Humayun Kabir was a strategic political move. He claimed that Kabir’s actions were intended to deceive the populace and declared, "No Babri Masjid can be made in Bengal," reinforcing his stance against such developments.

Support for Women’s Reservation

Reiterating his commitment to women’s rights, Shah expressed support for the proposed women’s reservation bill, describing it as a pressing necessity in today’s political climate.
