Election Commission Issues Directive for West Bengal Voter Verification

In response to a Supreme Court directive issued on January 19, the Election Commission (EC) has taken significant steps to ensure the transparency of voter verification in West Bengal. The EC has instructed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state to display the names of voters categorized under “logical discrepancies” and “unmapped” classifications by January 24.

Display Locations for Voter Information

The names will be made available at various public venues, including:

• Gram Panchayat Bhawans
• Taluka public spaces
• Block offices in talukas
• Ward offices in urban centers

This initiative aims to enhance voter awareness and participation ahead of upcoming elections.

Submitting Objections and Documentation

Individuals identified under the specified categories will have the opportunity to submit documents or objections. This process allows for submissions to be made through an authorized representative, which may include a booth-level agent. It’s important to note that a signed or thumb-marked authority letter from the individual must accompany any representation.

Resource Allocation for Smooth Process

On the same day, the Election Commission reached out to Bengal’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) with a request for adequate manpower. This manpower will be deployed to support the CEO in managing activities at the aforementioned locations.

Ensuring Law and Order During the Process

Furthermore, the EC has mandated that the Bengal DGP, the Kolkata police commissioner, district collectors, and Superintendents of Police (SPs) ensure that there are no disruptions to law and order at the designated locations. This is crucial to ensure that the State Information Reporting (SIR) process proceeds without complications. The Commission warned that action would be taken against any disturbances affecting SIR activities.
