Air Quality Management Updates: GRAP III Revoked in Delhi-NCR

Significant Improvement in Air Quality

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced the lifting of GRAP III restrictions in Delhi-NCR on Friday due to noticeable improvements in air quality. The Air Quality Index (AQI) plummeted from 380 on Thursday to 236 by Friday afternoon, indicating a positive trend in air conditions.

Official Statement on the Revocation

An official, as reported by PTI, stated: “The AQI of Delhi, which was recorded as 380 on Thursday, has significantly improved to 236 at 4 PM on Friday. Considering the prevailing air quality trend, the CAQM Sub-Committee decided to revoke all actions under Stage-3 of the extant GRAP, effective immediately across the entire NCR.”

Continued Enforcement of Stages 1 and 2 Measures

Despite lifting GRAP III restrictions, the commission will continue to implement measures under Stages 1 and 2 of GRAP. These stages are crucial for maintaining air quality standards in the region.

The Struggle Against Pollution in Delhi-NCR

Delhi-NCR has been grappling with severe pollution levels recently. The measures under Stage III (AQI of 401–450) were triggered in December due to rising AQI levels, characterized by slow wind speeds and unfavorable meteorological conditions that hindered the dispersion of pollutants.

What’s Banned Under GRAP III

The following activities were prohibited under GRAP III:

• Non-essential Construction and Demolition: Activities like earthwork, piling, welding, painting, and plastering.
• Transportation Restrictions: Moving construction materials such as cement and sand on unpaved roads.
• Industrial Activities: Operation of stone crushers, brick kilns, and mining activities; the use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers; and non-essential diesel-powered vehicles.
• Use of Unapproved Fuels: Industries have been restricted from utilizing fuels that do not meet approved standards.

What’s Allowed or Exempted

Certain activities continue to be permitted despite the restrictions:

• Essential Services and Infrastructure Projects: Includes metro, railway, airport, highway, defense, healthcare, and sanitation projects.
• Critical Construction Work: Limited construction involving strict dust control and waste management measures.
• Support for Persons with Disabilities: Exemption for disabled individuals using specific vehicles.
• Education and Public Transport: Continued use of public transport and online classes for students up to Grade 5.

By implementing and adapting these regulations, the CAQM aims to improve air quality and safeguard the health of residents in Delhi-NCR.
