This statement comes amid the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) firm refusal to play matches in India. Shanto expressed these sentiments just a day before the ICC Board is set to meet and address the ongoing standoff.

Lack of Communication Within Cricket Welfare Association

In a recent media interaction, Shanto highlighted the absence of formal discussions within the Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) regarding the World Cup. However, he emphasized that the players unanimously crave the opportunity to participate in this significant event.

Players’ Mental Strain

Shanto remarked, "There wasn’t really an opportunity to talk about it." He mentioned the players’ busy schedules and the mental toll from recent events affecting them deeply. "It was a very tough time," he added, reflecting on the challenges faced by the team.

The Importance of the T20 World Cup

Shanto underscored the magnitude of the World Cup, referring to it as an irreplaceable opportunity for cricketers. "As cricketers, we always want to play. When it’s an event like the World Cup, we want to be there," he stressed, noting that such tournaments are infrequent and vital for showcasing their talent.

The Players’ Position and the Board’s Silence

While the decision ultimately lies with the BCB, Shanto admitted the players remain largely uninformed about the ongoing internal discussions. "I don’t really know what is happening internally," he said, but affirmed, "as players, we definitely want to play." He expressed hope that if the issues are resolved, participating in the World Cup will be beneficial for the team.

Mixed Feelings from the Captain

Echoing Shanto’s sentiments, Bangladesh T20 captain Litton Das shared his frustration regarding the lack of communication from the BCB. "No, consent was not taken," Das remarked, indicating that players were neither consulted nor informed about the decision to abstain from traveling to India.

Security Concerns and Relocation Requests

The BCB, with support from its government, has cited security concerns as the reason for refusing to play their group-stage matches in India. Instead, they have requested the ICC to relocate these matches to co-host Sri Lanka. Negotiations between the ICC and BCB, including a recent meeting in Dhaka, have not yet resolved the deadlock.

Support from the Pakistan Cricket Board

In an additional twist, it has been reported that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has supported Bangladesh’s position in its correspondence with the ICC, highlighting regional political instability as a primary concern. Despite this, the ICC has maintained its stance that the tournament will proceed as originally scheduled.

With the T20 World Cup set to commence on February 7 and Bangladesh’s four group matches scheduled for locations in Kolkata and Mumbai, the upcoming ICC Board meeting is anticipated to be pivotal in determining the fate of Bangladesh’s World Cup journey.
