A recent citizen-funded study conducted in New Delhi has revealed that the quality of commonly prescribed generic medications is comparable to that of their more expensive branded counterparts. This groundbreaking research indicates that patients need not fear the safety and efficacy of affordable generics, especially given that some branded medications can cost up to 14 times more for the same treatment.

Research Initiatives by Mission for Ethics and Science in Healthcare

The study, titled "Citizens Generic vs Branded Drugs Quality Project," was spearheaded by the Kerala-based non-profit organization Mission for Ethics and Science in Healthcare. The research analyzed 131 samples of 22 widely used medications targeting conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, liver disorders, and more.

Methodology and Testing

Under the guidance of Cyriac Abby Philips, also known as "The Liver Doc," the project focused on debunking myths surrounding cheaper medications. The team tested various samples purchased from pharmacies, including branded drugs, branded generics, local generics, and government-supplied medicines under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana initiative.

Testing was carried out in a laboratory accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories and the US Food and Drug Administration, using five critical parameters:

• Drug content
• Dissolution
• Uniformity
• Impurities
• Physical appearance

All generic samples met prescribed quality standards and performed on par with branded medicines.

Noteworthy Findings: Pricing Disparities

One of the most striking outcomes was the significant price difference between branded and generic medications. The average cost per tablet for branded medicines stood at Rs 11.17, while Jan Aushadhi drugs averaged only Rs 2.40. For certain medications, such as pantoprazole and atorvastatin, the price gap was staggering, with branded options costing five to fourteen times more than affordable, quality-tested alternatives.

Impact on Healthcare Expenditure

Indians spend approximately 62% to 69% of their total healthcare expenditure on medications. The high costs often lead to challenges such as missed doses, irregular intake, or even discontinuation of critical treatments, particularly for chronic conditions.

Clinicians’ Perspectives on Affordable Medicines

Experts in the medical field have expressed support for the study’s findings, aligning them with their practical experiences. Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, a senior consultant in internal medicine, emphasized that lower-cost options meet quality standards and are effective for patients facing financial constraints. He cautioned, however, that ongoing monitoring is necessary due to practical concerns regarding availability and dosage options.

Similarly, Dr. Sandeep Kharb, a senior consultant in endocrinology, confirmed that patients generally fare well on affordable medications like metformin, amlodipine, and levothyroxine. He highlighted the importance of rigorous testing in ensuring quality while also noting that affordability is crucial for long-term adherence to treatment plans.
