Announcement of Resignation
On the eve of polling in Assam, Suren Daimari, the Congress candidate for the Udalguri constituency, announced his resignation from the party and stated that he has “surrendered” his candidature. However, the Congress party indicated that Daimari has yet to formally submit his resignation letter.
Election Commission’s Position
A senior election commission official confirmed that Daimari’s name will still appear on the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), as the deadline for withdrawing nominations has already passed. This ensures that voters can still cast their votes for him.
Daimari’s Reasons for Resignation
During a press conference, Daimari expressed his dissatisfaction with the Congress party, stating, “There is no benefit of being in the Congress. It has betrayed me.” He accused the party of prioritizing the interests of certain groups while neglecting the Scheduled Tribes, to which he belongs.
Lack of Support from the Party
Daimari claimed that after receiving his nomination for the Udalguri seat, he received no support during his campaign. “I called the party leadership multiple times, but they did not answer my calls. I am hurt due to their lack of assistance,” he lamented. He felt abandoned by the district Congress committee as well, leading him to make the difficult decision to leave the party.

When questioned about his resignation just a day before the polls, Daimari insisted, “I have not betrayed the party; the party has betrayed me.” In light of his announcement, the election official reiterated that candidates’ names had already been uploaded to the EVMs, and polling parties had already departed for their designated polling stations. Therefore, there is no possibility of withdrawing from the race at this late stage.

Polling for Assam’s 126-member Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with results to be announced on May 4. The Udalguri Assembly seat features four candidates, including Daimari, BJP ally BPF’s Rihon Daimari, UPPL’s Dipen Boro, and Voters Party International’s Unike Basumatary.
