In a heartbreaking incident in Dirai Upazila of Sunamganj district, Bangladesh, a 21-year-old man named Joy Mohapatra reportedly took his own life following alleged verbal abuse and physical assault by a local shopkeeper over a debt of Tk 500.
Details of the Incident
Joy’s family revealed that he purchased poison from the same shop owned by Amirul Islam, the shopkeeper involved in the incident. “My son died due to Amirul Islam’s insulting behaviour and provocation,” lamented Joy’s mother, Shelly Mohapatra. She described how Amirul took Joy’s mobile phone when he couldn’t pay the debt in the morning. When Joy requested his SIM card later, Amirul allegedly locked the door and slapped him when he returned.
Mother’s Harrowing Account
Shelly recounted that when Joy arrived home, he collapsed, with saliva coming out of his mouth. “My son had consumed poison bought from that shop,” she said, expressing her devastation over the loss. Local sources confirmed that Joy had previously purchased a mobile phone from Amirul for Tk 5,500 and was struggling to repay a small portion of that debt.
