Recent Escalation of Violence

On Saturday, Thailand reported that Cambodian forces killed four Thai soldiers amidst ongoing clashes along the contentious border. This confrontation has escalated tensions significantly, particularly after Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that a ceasefire agreement had been reached. According to the Thai defense ministry, the fatalities on Saturday take the death toll from recent hostilities to at least 24 for the week, as reported by AFP.

Thailand’s army reported that six people were injured on Saturday due to rocket fire from Cambodian forces, while Cambodia’s information minister, Neth Pheaktra, accused Thai troops of launching attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Additionally, a spokesperson for the Thai navy claimed that the air force had successfully targeted two Cambodian bridges reportedly utilized for transporting arms to the conflict area.

Diplomatic Efforts and Skepticism

The United States, China, and Malaysia, the current chair of ASEAN, successfully brokered a ceasefire in July after an initial five-day conflict. Following that agreement, Trump supported a joint declaration aimed at fostering new trade deals between the nations. However, Thailand later suspended the agreement after its soldiers sustained injuries from landmines along the border.

Despite diplomatic efforts, civilians on both sides remain skeptical about the prospect of lasting peace. In Buriram province, Thai evacuee Kanyapat Saopria expressed distrust towards Cambodia, stating, “The last round of peace efforts didn’t work out… I don’t know if this one will either.”

Conversely, Cambodian evacuee Vy Rina shared her disappointment over the continuing violence, saying, “I am not happy with brutal acts.”
