NEW DELHI: Italy all-rounder Thomas Draca is eager to embrace the overwhelming support from his homeland during the upcoming T20 World Cup. Traditionally known as a football powerhouse with legends such as Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluigi Buffon, Italy is now carving out its space in the realm of cricket.
Dreaming Big on the World Stage
Draca is determined to soak in every moment, particularly the chants of “Forza Italia! Forza Italia!” as Italy prepares to kick off their T20 World Cup journey against Scotland on Monday at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Aged just six during Italy’s 2006 FIFA World Cup victory, Draca recalls the excitement of that pivotal moment in his sporting life.
A Love for Both Football and Cricket
“The moment is going to be surreal. It’s a dream come true. I first watched Italy win the football World Cup in 2006. At that time, I was even supporting Australia! It’s a funny comparison people draw between Italian football and cricket,” Draca shared in an exclusive interview with TimesofIndia.com.
Transition from Football to Cricket
Initially, Draca was immersed in football, playing until around 2016 and even trying his luck in professional settings in the UK. However, as he stepped into the cricket scene more seriously, he realized where his true passion lay.
“During my childhood, I played cricket casually, but it gradually became my true love. Looking back, I’m grateful I made the switch,” he stated.
The Balancing Act at Home
In Draca’s household, sportsmanship was a blend of football and cricket. His mother favored cricket while his father rooted for football. “They never pushed me toward one sport; they just supported my passion,” Draca recalled.
Confidence Ahead of the IC T20 World Cup
With Italy making history as they earn a place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Draca believes this is just the beginning for cricket in Italy. “Our group is tough, but if we can secure a couple of early wins, anything is possible in T20 cricket,” he commented.
Upcoming Matches and Team Dynamics
Italy will face Scotland in their opener, followed by matches against Nepal, England, and West Indies. Despite Italy’s underdog status, Draca remains optimistic about their prospects in the tournament. “We have a great coaching staff and a positive environment,” he added.
Exploring Indian Cuisine
Aside from cricket, Draca is excited about experiencing India’s diverse culinary landscape. “In Nepal, I was mostly confined to my hotel. This time, I want to explore the culture and try different foods, especially with friends joining me,” he expressed.
