Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was laid to rest with full state honors beside her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, on Wednesday. Dignitaries Pay Tribute

Among the foreign dignitaries attending the funeral was External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who delivered a personal letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Zia’s son and BNP acting chairperson, Tarique Rahman.

Modi’s Heartfelt Message

In his letter, Modi expressed that Zia’s passing created an irreplaceable void, but her vision and legacy would continue to resonate. He conveyed confidence that her ideals would thrive under Tarique’s leadership, serving as a guiding light for the future of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and enhancing the historic partnership between India and Bangladesh.

A Legacy Remembered

Khaleda Zia, a towering figure in Bangladeshi politics, passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness. News of her death brought mourners from various parts of the country into the capital, reflecting her enduring influence.

The Funeral Procession

Her coffin, draped in the national flag, was transported to the funeral site in a convoy from her residence. Interim government chief Muhammad Yunus and Tarique joined the funeral prayers, alongside senior leaders from neighboring countries like Pakistan and Nepal.

A Historic Gathering

After arriving in Dhaka, Jaishankar met with Tarique Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh after over 17 years in self-exile to participate in the upcoming February 12 election. Jaishankar conveyed deepest condolences on behalf of the Indian government and people.

A Last Glimpse of Leadership

Thousands of mourners gathered outside the parliament complex for a final glimpse of their beloved leader. Supporters carried flags featuring Zia’s photograph, while Tarique urged the crowd to pray for her eternal peace.

Funeral Prayers Led by Baitul Mukarram Mosque Cleric

The chief cleric of Baitul Mokarram National Mosque, Mohammad Abdul Kader, led the funeral prayers (namaz-e-janaza), and a senior BNP member read a brief biography of Zia. Bangladesh’s high commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, highlighted the potential for a new chapter in the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

A Global Farewell

Representatives from 33 countries, including ambassadors and heads of international organizations stationed in Dhaka, attended the funeral prayers, underscoring Khaleda Zia’s significance not just in Bangladesh but on the global stage.
