Church in Wales Approves Bill for Same-Sex Marriage Blessings

The Church in Wales has made a significant move towards inclusivity by approving a bill to offer blessings for same-sex marriages. This historic decision, made on April 15, 2023, came after a strong majority supported the proposal.

Permanent Blessings for Same-Sex Marriages

The new bill ensures that same-sex couples can have their marriages or civil partnerships blessed within the church. The wording for these ceremonies will now be officially included in the Book of Common Prayer, which serves as a guide for church services.

The proposal was passed by the Church’s 143-member governing body. To succeed, it required a two-thirds majority across three groups: bishops, clergy, and lay members.

Bishop Mary Stallard of Llandaff echoed these sentiments, noting that negative attitudes towards sexuality in the church can lead to deep personal struggles. She described the previous blessing of same-sex partnerships as “something good and beautiful.”

Opposition and Concerns

Not all members of the church agree with the new policy. Some have voiced concerns that it may lead to division within the congregation. Deacon Andy Grimwood expressed that the decision could create discord and may cause some individuals to leave the church.

Rev. Melanie Prince noted that members of the Anglican Church in Nigeria urged the Church in Wales to adhere to traditional teachings. Additionally, member Julia Schulz raised concerns that the blessings might closely resemble a marriage service, challenging long-held beliefs.
