NEW DELHI: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat shared his insights on live-in relationships during a gathering in Kolkata. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he asserted that live-in arrangements indicate a reluctance to accept responsibility.

“You’re not ready to take responsibility. This isn’t right,” Bhagwat emphasized to the audience. He suggested that individuals who wish to avoid marriage should consider a life of renunciation instead. “If you don’t want to get married, that’s fine. We can become sanyasis. But if you won’t even do that, and also won’t take responsibility, then how will things work?” he posed.
The Ideal Family Size According to Bhagwat
Bhagwat further discussed the number of children a couple should have, stating it should be decided by the family, the bride and groom, and society as a whole. “A formula cannot be given,” he remarked. However, he mentioned insights from various professionals, including doctors, psychologists, and demographers, indicating that marrying early (between the ages of 19 and 25) and having three children yields health benefits.

“I’ve gained some knowledge by talking to doctors, etc., and they say that if marriage takes place early, between the ages of 19-25, and there are three children, then the health of the parents and children remains good,” he elaborated. Additionally, he shared that psychologists believe having three children helps individuals learn ego management. “Psychologists say that having three children helps people learn ego management,” Bhagwat noted.

Despite expressing these views, Bhagwat acknowledged the limits of his expertise. “I am a preacher, unmarried. I don’t know anything about this matter,” he concluded, highlighting his role as a disseminator of information rather than a personal advocate.
