Recent data reveals that certain districts in India are at the forefront of road fatalities. Notable regions such as Nasik-Rural, Pune-Rural, Patna, Ahmednagar, Purba Medinipur, Solapur-Rural, Muzaffarpur, Belagavi, Kanpur, and Bulandshahr top the list of the 100 districts with the highest road death rates. This information was presented during a state transporters meeting in New Delhi, focusing on road safety strategies for 2023 and 2024.
Insights from the Transport Minister
Chaired by Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, the meeting involved participation from 27 state ministers. “A comprehensive study has been conducted to pinpoint districts needing immediate action. We must implement evidence-based measures to reduce road fatalities and work towards our ambition of achieving zero fatalities. Noteworthy interventions in Nagpur demonstrated a 22% reduction in fatalities last year compared to 2024, while Unnao in Uttar Pradesh saw a 5% decrease and Kamrup in Assam a 4% decrease,” Gadkari noted, emphasizing the capability to significantly lower road deaths.
Fatality Statistics and Patterns
According to information shared with state transport ministers and transport commissioners, these 100 districts, covering 15 states including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Telangana, reported over 89,000 deaths in 2023 and 2024. Alarmingly, 53% of fatalities occurred in crashes between 3 PM and midnight, and 72% were attributed to rear-end, head-on, and pedestrian crashes.
Data Driven Hyperlocal Intervention (DDHI)
To tackle this crisis, the ministry has introduced the ‘Data Driven Hyperlocal Intervention (DDHI)’ initiative, aimed at implementing targeted measures across these 100 districts, with over 30 districts actively participating in the zero fatality program. Road Transport Secretary V. Umashankar outlined that mere policy decisions from Delhi will not suffice to reduce traffic incidents. “Interventions at the district level are essential. High-cost solutions are not always the most effective; we must focus on accurately analyzing crash causes and tailoring interventions accordingly,” he stated.
