A Statesman Who Inspired Generations
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was not just a politician or a Prime Minister; he served as the conscience-keeper of India’s democracy. His remarkable ability to combine courage with compassion, conviction with inclusiveness, and nationalism with humanity remains influential in today’s India. His legacy is especially significant under the Modi government’s ongoing transformational initiatives.
A Guiding Light for Effective Governance
Vajpayee’s exemplary life serves as a guiding light for those who believe in effective and corruption-free governance rooted in genuine concern for the common man. His birthday, December 25, is celebrated as Good Governance Day in recognition of his contributions.
Personal Memories: The Charismatic Leader
Vajpayee’s decency, simplicity, and sensitivity endeared him to people across generations. I fondly recall moments spent with him during my childhood. I remember a particular afternoon in our Mumbai home. As I played marbles in the living room, he sat beside me and helped me hit a marble across the room, leaving me in awe of his playful spirit.
A Bond Beyond Politics
I also recall the time he invited me to accompany him on a four-day tour in western Maharashtra. Despite my unpreparedness, he made sure I was comfortable by buying me Kolhapuri chappals and clothes. His speech honoring the legendary Lata Mangeshkar in Sangli still resonates with me; he captivated his audience with reflections on Indian culture, tradition, and music—without even mentioning politics.
A Leader Rooted in Culture
Vajpayee was a leader deeply grounded in India’s civilizational ethos. Notably, he was the first Indian leader to address the UN General Assembly in Hindi, a precedent later followed by PM Modi. This emphasis on cultural identity at international forums reflects his visionary leadership.
Continuing the Legacy
In North Mumbai, we honor his legacy with a Skill Development and Job Center named after him. The current budget includes provisions for setting up 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in government schools to foster innovation and scientific temper among students.
Governance with Compassion
Vajpayee understood that strength should be tempered with sensitivity. His approach, evident during his tenure, prioritizes national security while ensuring compassion through initiatives like free housing, toilet availability, food security, and healthcare coverage. Today’s governance under PM Modi continues this dual focus.
The Reformist Visionary
In his Independence Day address in 2000, Vajpayee boldly asserted that “to reform is to improve the life of every citizen.” His government initiated transformative reforms in banking, telecom, insurance, and education, while also expanding social initiatives to aid the poorest households.
Building Nation through Infrastructure
Understanding that enduring national strength relies on robust infrastructure, Vajpayee spearheaded landmark initiatives like the Golden Quadrilateral and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, enhancing connectivity and integrating remote regions into the national mainstream. These efforts laid the foundation for current infrastructure transformations.
Honoring a Visionary Leader
The Atal Tunnel, named in his honor, connects Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh and J&K, recognizing Vajpayee’s strategic foresight. As a founding member and the first president of the BJP, he inspired future generations with his prophetic words: “Andhera chhatega, sooraj niklega, kamal khilega” (Darkness will disappear, the sun will rise, and the lotus will bloom).
A Moral Compass for the Future
For the BJP, Vajpayee is not just a leader of the past but a moral compass for the present and future. Under PM Modi’s leadership, India continues to realize many of the aspirations Vajpayee envisioned—emerging as a confident and self-reliant nation that commands global respect.
