Sonam Wangchuk: A Climate Activist’s Quest for Change from Behind Bars

Sonam Wangchuk, a renowned climate activist and the inspiration behind Aamir Khan’s character in the film 3 Idiots, has been incarcerated under the National Security Act since September 26, 2025. His detention followed protests in Ladakh that resulted in tragic loss of life. Currently, Wangchuk is serving time in solitary confinement in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, where he has already spent over 110 days.

The Push for Eco-Friendly Experiments

Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, co-founder of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL), shared insights about her recent visit with him. During their meeting, Wangchuk expressed a desire to conduct experiments aimed at improving his prison surroundings. Specifically, he requested instruments such as thermometers to explore ideas related to eco-responsive architecture.

Angmo highlighted Wangchuk’s commitment to climate change education, stating, “He asked me to check with the jail administration and the Supreme Court of India for permission to obtain these instruments.”

Educational Gifts and Interests

Wangchuk received a special gift during Angmo’s visit: a book titled Ants: Workers of the World by Eleanor Spicer Rice and Eduard Florin Niga. This book, along with other texts on climate change, was part of Wangchuk’s wish list. Angmo explained that her husband has been observing ant behavior in jail, intrigued by their collective solidarity and team spirit.

“If he observes some ants and their behavior, he asks me to get books on it because the ant community has a lot of solidarity,” she noted.

Legal Battles Ahead

In response to Wangchuk’s ongoing detention, Gitanjali Angmo has filed a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court, aiming to challenge his imprisonment and seek urgent release. The next hearing is scheduled for January 29.
