Racist Attack on Indian-Australian Seniors in Melbourne

“I am lucky to be alive,” said Rohit Singh after a morning walk in Melbourne’s west escalated into a violent racist incident involving elderly Indian-Australians. This horrifying scenario has garnered significant attention and sparked conversations about racism in Australia.

Incidents of Racial Abuse

A group of about 12 seniors routinely gathers for walks, coffee, and conversation at Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre in Point Cook. Recently, however, they have been subjected to escalating racial abuse. According to Rohit Singh, whose father is part of this group, the harassment had been building over several days.

Escalation of Harassment

Singh told The Australia Today that an unidentified woman repeatedly approached the elderly walkers, hurling insults such as “go back to your country” and proclaiming they “don’t belong here.” Initially, the group attempted to ignore the abuse, hoping it would subside.

A Physical Confrontation

Despite their efforts to dismiss the verbal attacks, the woman returned, continuing her tirade against the seniors. When Rohit Singh intervened to defend his father and the others, the situation escalated into a physical confrontation. The woman threw a bag of rubbish at them and then got into her car, driving towards the group. Singh alleges that she deliberately struck him and his father with her vehicle.

The Aftermath and Seeked Justice

“I am lucky to be alive,” Singh recounted, highlighting the dangers of repeated abuse aimed at vulnerable elderly Indian Australians. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance. A video of the incident captures the moment the car collided with both Rohit Singh and his father.

Victoria Police were called to the scene, and a report has been filed. An off-duty police officer witnessed the incident, but as of now, no arrests have been made.

Another member of the walking group, referred to only as Mr. Parmar, expressed that these morning walks serve a purpose beyond exercise. “It is a space for us to socialize, practice language, build friendships, and cultivate a sense of belonging. That is what makes repeated racist harassment so deeply disturbing,” he stated.
