NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media on Thursday to speak about women’s empowerment, coinciding with a special session of Parliament.

In a post on X, PM Modi mentioned that India is about to take a “historic step” to empower women, as lawmakers gear up to discuss a vital bill concerning the women’s reservation framework.

“Starting today, in the special session of Parliament, our country is about to take a historic step towards women’s empowerment. The respect for our mothers and sisters is the respect for the nation,” he shared in his post, which also included a Sanskrit verse underscoring women’s role in dispelling ignorance and enlightening society.

    Women’s Reservation Bill in Focus

The special session, scheduled from April 16 to 18, aims to discuss an amendment to enact the women’s reservation law. This is intended to guarantee one-third representation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies starting from the 2029 general elections.

The Central government is seeking broad political backing for this initiative. Previously, PM Modi urged opposition parties to support the amendment, emphasizing that it embodies the aspirations of “every sister and daughter of this country.”

In addition to the reservation bill, key legislations like the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026, are also set to be introduced.

    Opposition Raises Concerns Over Delimitation

While opposition parties have expressed support for the swift implementation of women’s reservation, they have voiced concerns related to the proposed delimitation exercise associated with the reforms.

Political leaders are expected to convene to finalize their strategies for the session, amidst protests in some regions. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has opposed the delimitation proposal, urging resistance against what he perceives as a threat to state representation.

The Centre has suggested increasing Lok Sabha seats from 543 to a maximum of 850 as part of this broader reform, igniting a significant political debate leading up to the special session.
