Graffiti with Antisemitic and Racist Messages

This week, police reported the discovery of hateful graffiti containing antisemitic, anti-Indian, and racist messages inside New York University’s Bern Dibner Library, located in downtown Brooklyn. The messages, which were scrawled in pen on a wall at 4 MetroTech Center, included a swastika and slurs directed at multiple ethnic groups, including Jews and Indians. Additionally, authorities noted the presence of anti-Black language, as reported by the New York Post.

The disturbing graffiti drew attention when it was shared on Instagram by the on-campus organization, Jewish on Campus. In response to the incident, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi condemned the act, calling it "deeply disturbing and unacceptable." He emphasized that acts of hatred and intimidation have no place on college campuses or in society at large. Krishnamoorthi called for a thorough investigation and urged for unity to confront antisemitism, anti-Indian bias, racism, and all forms of bigotry.

“This incident must be fully investigated, and we must remain united in confronting antisemitism, anti-Indian hate, racism, and all forms of bigotry so every student can learn and live free from fear," he stated.

Student Perspectives

The graffiti was initially brought to light by a joint Instagram post on Tuesday by the national and NYU chapters of Jewish on Campus, which detailed the offensive messages aimed at Jewish individuals. The post garnered over 1,000 likes, highlighting the community’s engagement with the issue.

Daniela Dreifach, a junior and co-president of NYU’s Jewish on Campus chapter, expressed her alarm at the incident but noted her appreciation for the university administration’s efforts to ensure that Jewish students feel safe and heard.

University Leadership’s Reaction

Fountain Walker, NYU’s Vice President for Global Campus Safety, also condemned the graffiti. He confirmed that the New York Police Department has classified the incident as a hate crime.

“The abhorrent graffiti included hateful rhetoric directed at Blacks, Indians, and Jews,” Walker stated. “Our Department of Campus Safety, in conjunction with our Title VI coordinator, is vigorously investigating this incident.”
