Decline in E-Challan Fine Recoveries in 2024

New Delhi: The recovery of fines raised through e-challans has seen a decline in 2024, amounting to Rs 3,834 crore compared to Rs 4,150 crore in 2023. This decline is noteworthy as unpaid fines have skyrocketed from Rs 6,654 crore in 2023 to Rs 9,097 crore in 2024, as reported by the road transport ministry data presented in the Rajya Sabha, according to Dipak Dash.

Traffic Violation Fines and Unpaid Dues

In response to queries regarding e-challans issued, fines recovered, and unpaid e-challans for traffic violations from 2022 to 2024, the ministry indicated that Uttar Pradesh (UP) ranks highest both in terms of recovery of fines and outstanding challans, followed closely by Rajasthan. Over the three years, UP reported recoveries totaling Rs 1,717 crore, with pending fines reaching Rs 5,785 crore.

Regional Insights on Unpaid Fines

Tamil Nadu and Kerala also reported significant unpaid dues, with amounts of Rs 1,235 crore and Rs 814 crore, respectively. Data from last year revealed that only 30% of fines were recovered, totaling Rs 3,834.8 crore against an overall fine amount of Rs 12,933 crore.
